KUALA LUMPUR residents are invited to visit Lorong Bandar 13 to see the splash of bright colours covering the community garden, reading space and also busking corner.

Lines of peach and lime green brighten up the 100m lane once considered dark and abandoned.

Located near Central Market, the lane upgrade was one of three programmes under Think City and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in conjunction with Kuala Lumpur Design Month.

All three programmes are aimed at enhancing the quality of public spaces in the city.

“It is important to persuade the community in this area to engage in this programme.

“Therefore, we designed the back lane according to their liking for them to use.

“If we want public spaces to serve a broader community, we need to make sure we meet the basic needs – cleanliness, safety and security,” said Think City programme director Dr Neil Khor.

The back lane project was a collaboration between Think City, Alam Flora, SWCorp and community members.

“This project is aimed at increasing the functionality of back lanes because they are typically treated as a dark, isolated and scary place, so a new perspective is required,” said DBKL project implementation and building maintenance department director Mohd Sahak Surip.

He added that this was a pilot project for the public realm improvement programme by DBKL and Think City.

Later, an exhibition entitled “Improving Streets of Downtown KL” by Jeffrey Lim was organised at Ruang by Think City on the second floor of the building next to the back lane.

The focus of the exhibition was on how to improve the city’s streetscape and it highlighted the importance of protecting historic streets, laneways and green open spaces – elements of a more liveable city.
