SABAH just held its first strongest woman challenge and gym trainer Joyce Heng Shu Xin was named champion.

The 32-year-old beat 12 others in the inaugural Sabah Strongest Woman Open Challenge held in Penampang, over the course of the competition’s various categories.

The categories included the vehicle pull (130kg), farmer’s walk (45kg each hand), tyre flip, car dead lift (130-150kg on the bar), yoke walk (120kg) and atlas stone.

Despite being a first timer in the competition, Heng easily beat the others who came from all over Sabah and Brunei.

Heng completed all categories in the fastest period of time and bagged RM1,500 as well as other prizes.

Vanecia Astrid, 32, and Frahsillia Onnie, 29, took second and third place and walked home with RM1,000 and RM700 respectively.

Event coordinator and promoter Roger Frederick said they organised the event to introduce the new sport to the public.

“We have been doing various sorts of programmes emphasising on tough or extreme sports and most of the time, the women are left out,” he said.

Realising the interest of women in such sports too, he and the organiser Andrew Impongan, or commonly known as DJ Othoe, decided to come up with this Sabah Strongest Woman Challenge.

Frederick also said that such programmes could help promote Sabah as an extreme sports centre.

He said even though only about a dozen participants signed up for the challenge, they were not discouraged and hope to do better next year.

“We actually got a lot of enquiries about this challenge only after it was over.

“So we are certain that there will be more participants next year,” he said.

The second Strongest Woman Challenge is set to take place next year but the dates have yet to be fixed.

A series of other similar sports events is also being lined up.

Details of such events can be found at the Borneo Extreme Events and Roger Frederick’s Facebook pages.
