An enchanted evening

KOTA KINABALU: A fashion charity event in Sandakan in conjunction with Malaysia Day was filled with glitz and glamour.

The “Fashion with Passion” gala night saw a line-up of wonderful programmes including catwalk by models in designer outfits, song performances by local entertainers and auctions held alongside a sumptuous dinner.

The Sept 16 event hosted by the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan, organised by the Persatuan Amal National 1Malaysia and co-sponsored by Sawit Kinabalu Group, saw more than RM160,000 raised through sales of tables and tickets, as well as from an auction conducted at the event.

At the fashion show, two dresses were auctioned off at RM5,000 each while a jewellery set courtesy of Elegance Club was sold for RM10,000.

Total table and ticket sales were RM161,000, exceeded the organiser’s target of RM100,000 funds.

Ninety percent of the total funds raised will be channelled to the Duchess of Kent Hospital Children’s Ward.

Sheraton Sandakan general manager Peter Padman, in expressing his gratitude for the donations, said children made up a third of “our population and all of our future.”

“So let us save their lives,” he said.

Quoting prolific Irish writer Oscar Wilde, Padman said the best way to make children good was to make them happy.

“Old men can make war, but it is children who will make history,” he added.

Also present during the event was Sawit Kinabalu Group group managing director Datuk Othman Walat and ICSD Ventures managing director Datuk Lai Voon Hon.

The event opened with a vibrant performance by the hotel’s own choir and continued with a fabulous haute couture fashion show by renowned Malaysian designers Bill Keith, Calvin Thoo, OrsonLiyu, Melinda Looi, Leslie Variyan, Suhara and Bon Zainal.

 

Emcees Bill Keith and BettyAnne Brohier stirred up a range of emotions in the audience as they showedtouching videos on the ailing children along with the young patients’ jokes and antics.

The guests were entertained by singers Sammy Arrif, Rozz Ritzmann, Poova and Noryn Aziz while they dined on lobsters, steak and Ayam Percik.
