Marvell Semiconductor Sdn Bhd will spend RM12mil to purchase equipment and engage new employees this year for its new RM8mil design centre in Penang.

Marvell’s director Ong Chin Hu explained that the company in Penang operates as what is called a “fabless facility” specialising in designing integrated circuits or chips for use in smart consumer electronic products.

“We outsource the manufacturing and assembly work to China, Taiwan, and Singapore,” he said at the official launch of the design centre by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng last week.

Marvell’s chips are used in wireless mobile devices, storage solutions, cloud services and technology, and consumer solutions.

Lim said that in Penang, Marvell has more than 60 employees, and more than 90% are highly skilled design and development engineers.

“About 40% of the employees have post graduate degrees,” he added.

Lim said that Marvell Technology Group, the parent company of Marvell Semiconductor, is one of the world’s top five fabless semiconductor companies.

“It uses world-class semiconductor foundry, packaging and test services to deliver high volume and low-cost total solutions to end customers,” Lim said.

The group has more than 7,000 employees worldwide, and international design centres in China, Europe, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and the US.
