Bureau promotes Sarawak as a convention destination

Building contacts: During the Business Events Roadshow organised by the Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau in China, the Sarawak Convention Bureau held numerous business exchange sessions in several cities.

As PART of an international branding strategy, Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) participated in a Business Events Roadshow to China organised by the Malaysian Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) in December last year.

The roadshow was held with the aim of marketing and promoting Malaysia and Sarawak especially as Asia’s business events hub; with a feature on destinations such as Penang, Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak.

The Sarawak delegation was represented by Donny Tan and Jason Tan, both business development managers of SCB alongside the Malaysian delegation represented by MyCEB and other industry players from Sabah, Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur.

SCB managing director Mike Cannon said, “Our main purpose of participating in the roadshow was to strengthen our marketing and promotional efforts towards recovery of the business events and tourism industry.

“We also made sure to touch base with our existing key contacts in China as well as establish new ones to expand our network of potential conference hosts and partners from China; to let them know that SCB is ever ready to provide support and assistance for their conference and meeting needs.”

The roadshow began in Guangzhou, moving on to Chengdu, Beijing and finally in Shanghai. Aside from a destination presentation on Sarawak, SCB created a special package for the China market that includes welcome banners, gifts, live performances and a themed dinner showcasing an array of local Sarawak and Malaysian cuisine, among others.

“Overall, the roadshow was a success in connecting with the local industry in China and to also reintroduce Sarawak’s capability and past successes in hosting international conferences and corporate meetings.

“The response was encouraging and we expect the momentum to carry on through to 2015,” said Donny

“The roadshow was a great initiative by MyCEB to gather the local industry and work together as a team in rebuilding Malaysia’s image as a business events destination.

“Our aim with the presentation on Sarawak was to inspire potential clients from China to venture to Sarawak and unfold a new chapter in their business adventure. We look forward to welcoming them to Sarawak in 2015,” said Jason.
