AS LEGENDARY soul funk band Earth, Wind and Fire frontman Maurice White strutted on stage at the height of the disco era, he held in his hands a musical instrument shrouded in mysticism, a powerful symbol of a bygone age.

Deftly plucking away at the instrument with both thumbs, White electrified a new generation of enthusiasts with the introduction of the kalimba, emanating sounds rooted in ancient traditions of Africa.
