Interview with model Laura Chandran for The Mod Life column

IT WAS her passion for fashion that led Kuala Lumpur lass Laura Chandran to stay on as a freelance model and eventually set up her own fashion collection.

“For me, it all started when I followed a friend to a photoshoot and I found it really interesting,” said Laura, who has been modelling for seven years now.

“Only about a year ago, I started my own fashion collection specialising in dresses and swimwear.”

The business idea, she admitted, came after her participation in a model search contest, where she met another participant who was running a similar business.

“The business has been growing quite well in the past year.

“We started off online, and now, we also have a small store in Kuala Lumpur that sells only some of the products.”

She has much to do when it comes to taking care of her business but thanks to a strong network in the modelling industry, she gets called up for modelling jobs as often as twice a week.

“I am very much into health and fitness so I will hit the gym whenever I am free. I especially love yoga because I find it really relaxing,” she added.

Laura admitted that she was once a competitive figure skater but she had to quit due to a knee injury.

These days, she only skates occasionally, for leisure. She also enjoys dancing, shopping and checking out new fashion trends, and reading.

What is your favourite genre of music?

“I like house music, as well as a bit of hip-hop and R&B.”

Where is one place you would like to visit?

“I would like to go to Paris because it is the fashion capital of the world.”

What is one skill you would like to learn?

“I think skiing. I have always seen pictures and it looks really interesting but I have not tried it myself.”

What is one bad habit that you have?

“A lot of people tell me I have issues with punctuality. I can also be a bit of a perfectionist, so I tend to stress myself out unnecessarily sometimes.”

If you could be someone else for a day, who would you be?

“Maybe a Victoria’s Secret model, just to see what goes on in their lives.”
