THE splendours of Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day come together nicely in Gurney Plaza’s ‘Spring of Joy and Love’ celebrations in Penang this festive season.
Colours typical of both occasions — gold and pink, which represent love, abundance and prosperity — are ubiquitous as the Year of the Goat is affectionately ushered in.
Besides eye-catching cherry blossoms, there are several fluffy rams, arches, parasols and a giant painting inscribed with an auspicious ancient poem to heighten the ambience for shoppers.
The special guests, who inclu-ded Penang municipal councillor Syerleena Rashid and The Star senior regional manager (operations) David Yeoh, did the honours in a symbolic lion dance eye-dotting ceremony at the mall on Tuesday.
With their eyes and faces inked, the five lions roared to life and pranced around in a brief performance much to the delight of everyone.
Later, the pressmen joined the mall’s management staff in a yee sang-tossing ceremony.
In her speech, Syerleena, who was representing Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey, noted that such programmes added colour to the festive season and enhanced Penang’s appeal.
“The diversity and celebration of cultures are what makes the state unique.
“It’s also testament that people of different backgrounds can get along in harmony,” she added.
