(From front to back, left to right) Try the signature Akiyoshi Maki, Yakitori Moriawase skewers, Ninniku Yakimeshi (garlic rice), Ebi Kakiage (shrimp and shredded vegetable tempura) or Chawan Mushi (steamed egg custard) at Akiyoshi, a modern Japanese gastropub.

MAKE your way to Akiyoshi in Automall along Karpal Singh Drive, Penang, when craving lip-smacking Japanese flavours and some drinks.

This cosy modern izakaya or gastropub offers everything from hearty dishes to light bites.

Raw fish lovers should have the Sashimi Moriawase. Luscious possibilities include salmon, yellow tail, tuna, surf clam or octopus.

The nigiri sushi is just as tasty or go for tummy-filling Maki varieties like the signature Akiyoshi Maki with octopus and avocado.

Contrast that with crunchy Agemono or deep-fried items such as Ebi Kakkiage, a shrimp and vegetable tempura.

Yakimono grill offerings include Unagi Kabayaki (eel), Shake Kama (salmon head) and Hamachi Kama (yellowtail cheek). The latter two are available Shioyaki style with just a little salt to enhance natural flavours or Teriyaki style.

Otherwise, try grilled skewers ranging from chicken meatballs to liver, wings, skin and gizzard.

Cannot decide what to order? Go for the Yakitori Moriawase that combines most of the above.

Fill up with Donburi rice dishes, noodles or Teishoku sets.

Then belly up to the bar for cocktails with Asian twists. The quality Japanese sake and whisky as well as special beers are also ideal accompaniments to the food.

There are also live band performances at certain times.

Opening hours are 11.30am to 2.30pm, and 6pm to 11pm daily. For reservations, call 04-2936206.
