EATING healthy does not necessarily mean paying a high price for bland food.
It means consuming whole foods with little-to-no saturated fats or processed food which can be replaced with natural, raw ingredients to make a wholesome meal.
Ours Eatery in Damansara City Mall aims to educate diners on these choices by serving up a mix of traditional and Western food with a healthy twist.
Diners can be rest assured that all ingredients used are good quality products which are whole and natural.
“All the dishes on our menu are created by me together with my chefs, and we try our very best to substitute any processed products with natural wholesome ones, such as santan. We use extra virgin coconut oil which is really healthy,” said Ours Eatery owner Jackie Leong.
The health conscious foodie that she is, Leong only wants to serve affordable dishes to her customers, to show them that healthy food does not necessarily have to be pricey.
Among offerings on the menu that have customers coming back for more is the newly launched Oatmeal Nasi Lemak, where the high-calorie coconut milk rice is replaced with oatmeal.
The dish retains the goodness of the traditional nasi lemak with homemade sambal, fried anchovies, peanuts and hard-boiled egg, minus the calories.
Another favourite would be the Naked Bowl or Wrap.
For as low as RM11, customers can choose from 11 base ingredients which consist of grains, pasta or fresh greens.
This is followed eight salad toppings to choose from, including sweet potato mash, Cuban black beans, beetroot and feta cheese, sweet roasted vegetables or sweet and spicy braised white tofu.
“Customers can even opt to have everything inside,” she said, adding that this comes with a choice of one oven-roasted ingredient which is the protein, or just greens for a vegetarian option.
The price of the Wrap or Naked Bowl is based on the choice of protein and there are no extra charges for additional bases, salad toppings or even sauces.
“One of our bestsellers would be the healthy beef rendang as many customers order that for their wrap or bowl,” she said.
Other oven-roasted ingredients available on the menu are sweet barbecue chicken, sambal chicken, pulled beef, pulled mushroom and oven-baked salmon with paprika topped with sauces like creamy butter, chimichurri, tomato salsa or even Malaysian sambal.
“All our sauces are made in-house from fresh ingredients and only last three days as there are no preservatives,” she added.
The ever-passionate Leong opened the eatery after her family turned health conscious on seeing her mother experience health issues about 10 years ago.
From that point, she started questioning everything she ate and strived to look for healthy substitutes.
The dessert section is close to Leong’s heart and she experiments with various recipes, substituting ingredients to ensure guilt-free consumption.
Her guilt-free chocolate brownie, for example, is made from black bean, cacao, organic oats, coconut oil and honey.
“I love baking and I just can’t bring myself to follow the original recipes because the amount of sugar or flour added is too much, so I look for healthier and more natural ingredients as substitute,” she said.
Always looking for new ways to turn around unhealthy food in healthy options, Leong and her team of chefs create customised menus for their catering business.
“We cater for all events, birthday parties, corporate functions and even simple family gatherings,” she said.
