A toast to the perfect marriage of wine and food

WHEN it comes to great food and wine, diners will feel right at home at The Wine Shop in Penang.

Be it to relax after work, chill out with friends or simply to hang out, the two outlets in Pulau Tikus (Lintang Burmah) and Bayan Lepas (Olive Residency beside Olive Tree Hotel) beckon invitingly.

The cosy interiors are characterised by custom designed wine barrel tables and high wooden stools, a delicatessen serving an extensive range of gourmet meats, sausages and cheeses while next door is the wine retail section offering some 1,000 labels from around the globe.

Emphasis may be on the wines but the food here is without a doubt one of the best around. Chef Ang Ming Hock is constantly coming out with new creations to keep choices fresh and exciting.

His duck leg confit with sauteed vegetables, mashed potato and brown sauce is enticingly delicious. The duck is cured overnight with sea salt, herbs and spices and then left to simmer in its own fat for four hours, resulting in its tender meat and awesome taste.

Bursting with robust flavours, the duck pasta is yet another full-bodied creation. Using fresh duck breast braised in red wine, this hearty dish is finished with parmigiano.

Light and healthy, the cold pesto pasta brims with bold and fresh flavours. The taste is further enhanced with crispy chicken ham, roasted almond, sundried tomatoes and parmigiano.

Other favourites include mixed grill combo (choice of meat or seafood), gammon ham steak, deep-fried pork knuckle, beef cheeks (in rich sauce) and cheesy pork burger (homemade patty with three types of melted cheese).

There are also seafood gumbo stew, deli salad, lumpfish caviar (sour cream, lemon wedge and crackers), caramelised roast pork, fried Korean noodle (signature savoury noodle) and shellfish spaghetti.

To further whet appetites are pizzas such as grilled chicken ham, spicy salami and pork sausage & bacon, as well as desserts consisting creme brulee, whole blueberry tart and chocolate tart.

Every dish is commendable and beautifully paired with a good bottle of wine to elevate the taste of what you consume.

It is simply heavenly when one has concocted the perfect marriage of wine and food.

Set lunch comprising a soup, main, dessert and coffee/tea (self service) is priced at RM18.90 nett and available from noon to 3pm daily.

A sumptuous wine pairing four-course dinner is also available at RM180++ per person with a minimum of four persons. A day’s advanced booking is required.

The Wine Shop (dining area) is open from noon to 1am while the retail for the Pulau Tikus outlet starts at 9am and Bayan Lepas at 10am. Both shops are closed on Sundays.
