Assam laksa is another must-try for fans of Nyonya cuisine.

THE Nyonya Buffet Dinner offering at Copthorne Orchid Hotel Penang’s Terrace Bay Restaurant has withstood the test of time despite steep competition from the many Nyonya restaurants around.

Renowned for its truly distinctive cuisine that fuses Malay herbs and spices with the best of Chinese cooking techniques, the Baba-Nyonya culture is very much an integral part of Penang’s heritage.

Tapping into this aspect, the buffet at Copthorne is all about authenticity and quality to tantalise all taste buds.

A collaboration between head chef K. Manokaran and Chinese chef Ph’ng Hon Loon, the diverse spread has certainly been pulling in the crowd.

Available from 7pm to 10pm every Saturday, the buffet tempts with over 25 items from two rotational menus.

To whet appetites are appetisers such as acar awak (pickled mixed vegetables), kerabu glass noodle as well as acar cucumber and pine-apple. Soups are kiam chye ark (salted vegetable and duck) and salted fish bone with tofu.

Hot dishes consist of joo hoo char (cuttlefish and shredded vegetables), fried fish in fermented soybean paste, kari ayam kapitan (Nyonya-style chicken curry), sambal udang (prawns with chilli paste), stir-fried mixed vegetables and chicken lorbak (deep-fried chicken rolls).

Over at the action stalls, diners get to whip up their own assam laksa (piquant and sour hot noodle with fresh vegetables in a fish broth) and pie tee (thin and crispy pastry tart shells filled with stir-fried mixed vegetables).

The Nyonyas are also famous for their desserts especially Nyonya kuih. Choices at the buffet include kuih bengka ubi kayu (baked tapioca cake), kuih talam (screw pine and coconut-layered cake), pulut tai-tai (glutinous rice cake with coconut jam) and kuih dadar (pandan pancake with sweet coconut filling).

Other choices are bubur cha-cha (coconut-based dessert with yam, taro, sweet potatoes and bananas), bee koh moey (black glutinous rice), kuih ee (glutinous rice balls), assorted jellies and puddings as well as mixed fruit platter.

The Nyonya Buffet Dinner is priced at RM42 per adult, RM32 per senior citizen and RM25 per child (aged four to 12 years). All prices are nett.

Some of the Nyonya creations are also available in the a la carte menu with more to be included soon so that patrons get to enjoy their favourites at their leisure at the 24-hour Terrace Bay.
