WHEN it comes to ringing in the New Year, Westin Kuala Lumpur’s Qba Bar & Grill has always preferred a quiet celebration. However, the atmosphere is set to change on Dec 31 this year as they introduce an all-you-can-eat Brazilian Churrascaria buffet to guests and party-goers.

“The celebration at Qba has always been quieter and more intimate with set menu-style dining and not buffets,” said junior sous chef Najmuddin Nor Rasid.

However, they have decided to go with the idea of a Brazilian Churrascaria buffet after receiving positive feedback from guests.

According to Najmuddin, the hotel had introduced the buffet early this year, making it available exclusively on Friday and Saturday nights.

The response was surprisingly encouraging, and this prompted them to continue the Brazilian-style skewer feast on New Year’s Eve, which falls on a Saturday.

The Churrascarian buffet offers a slight twist over the regular spread. To begin, guests enjoy a small selection of appetisers ranging from cut fruits to salads and soups.

During the preview, Najmuddin prepared the Coconut Shrimp Soup and Colombian Chicken Soup, and warned me not to overindulge at the starters table to make room for the skewered goodies.

As we waited patiently for the skewered meat, Najmuddin brought out four special dishes: Salmon Platter, Forbidden Black Rice Salad, Minced Lamb Kebab and Roast Turkey with Latin-inspired stuffing.

The dishes were specially curated for the New Year’s Eve affair to give diners a taste of these favourites.

As we tucked in together on a long table set up near the open kitchen area, servers would appear now and again to ask if we wanted to top up our plates.

All evening long, one after another, the waiters would turn up holding a skewer with cuts of lamb, beef or chicken wings straight from the grill.

While they sliced off the meat from the skewer, you would need to help them too in order to plate the meat properly, and this made the whole experience more enjoyable.

My favourite was the juicy Slow Cooked Beef Ribs, which took six hours to prepare. The Roasted Boneless Lamb Leg was excellent too.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a meat-loving person to enjoy the buffet as the spread includes seafood — grilled snapper, seabass, prawn and scallop too.

Before you move on to dessert, remember to ask the server for a generous serving of the Freshly Glazed Grilled Pineapple. It’s a must at every Churrascaria buffet outing.

For dessert, Najmuddin prepared what he called the Black Cigar — 64% chocolate hazelnut rice crisp with sides of raspberry pearl and elderflower sorbet.

The buffet dinner is priced at RM168 nett person (food only).
