Classic yee sang for Lunar New Year

THE Year of the Monkey sees Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant at Hilton Petaling Jaya unfolding sumptuous menus for the Chinese New Year.

Chinese executive chef Ben Lim has prepared specially crafted pork-free Cantonese cuisines to welcome the Lunar New Year.

The auspicious festive menus begin with yee sang – the must-have prosperity salad during Chinese New Year, and Toh Yuen’s Prosperity signature dishes include the Salmon Yee Sang.

A variety of options include the jelly fish, abalone and snow pear yee sang as well as takeaway options are also available.

Take your pick from the three celebratory banquet menus.

Catering to a table of 10, the Everlasting Happiness is priced at RM1,618nett, Luck and Joyfulness (RM1,968) and Sea of Prosperity (RM2,308).

We had a chance to sample dishes from the various menus comprising Toh Yuen’s Prosperity signature Salmon Yee Sang, Double Boiled Fish Maw Soup with Black Mushrooms and Dried Scallops, Teow Chew Style Steamed Pomfret, Stewed Whole Abalone with Australian Sea Cucumber and Sea Moss, Deep Fried Prawns with Lemon Mayonnaise Sauce, Steamed Imperial Chicken with Chinese Herbs and Sea Moss and Steamed Glutinous Rice with Dried Oysters wrapped in Lotus Leaf.

While other restaurants have tweaked and added eccentric flavours to their yee sang, Toh Yuen stays true to the classics.

The Salmon Yee Sang was zesty, fresh and a great start to the meal.

The fish maw, the dried form of fish air bladder, is painstakingly made into a soothing tasty soup.

While the sea cucumber is known for treating ailments such as skin diseases; this edible version is nonetheless an acquired taste.

The glutinous rice in lotus leaf (lo mai gai in Cantonese) was done to perfection and tasty with the right amount of umami flavour.

For dessert, they served my favourite refreshing concoction of Osmanthus Sweet Olive with Lemongrass Jelly.

The Chinese New Year Cake (nian gao) with Shredded Coconut was delicate and pleasant.

The Prosperity reunion dinner and lunch sets are available until Feb 28. The restaurant is open on the eve of Chinese New Year and throughout the 15-day celebration.
