SIBU: This year’s Malaysia Day celebrations will be held here on Sept 16 at 7pm, said Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.
Wong, who is in charge of the event, said programmes planned were aimed at instilling the spirit of patriotism.
“The show will start at 7pm with a concert featuring local artistes, followed by the arrival of the Head of State Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi Taib at about 8pm.
“The VIP guests will be welcomed by school pupils to the accompaniment of 1Malaysia beat comprising hadrah and lion dance,” he said at a press conference here.
Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datin Amar Jumaa’ni Tun Tuanku Bujang are expected to attend the event.
The chief minister will deliver his keynote address followed by a symbolic launching of the event by Taib.
Wong said the state Information Department director Abang Sardon Abang Hashim, who is the leader of the Kembara Jalur Gemilang convoy, would hand over the Jalur Gemilang to Taib for the flag-raising ceremony.
A total of 300 singers and dancers will deliver a special performance called Malaysia Negaraku featuring poetry recital, singing and dances.
Wong said there would be a fireworks show at the end of the event.
He urged the public to fly the national flags at their premises to show support for Malaysia Day.
