Company’s new policy supports modern families

The global parental leave policy is part of Johnson & Johnson‘s commitment to care for their employees well-being beyond the office.

Johnson & Johnson has implemented its new Global Parental Leave Policy, which provides a maximum of eight weeks paid parental leave to non-unionised, eligible employees (maternal, paternal and adoptive parents) with effect from this month.

This policy gives new parents the chance to spend quality time with their newborn or newly adopted child during the first year.

“Welcoming a newborn into a family is a blessing. We also understand new parents need all the support they can get.

“With this new policy, we hope to support new parents at Johnson & Johnson through this milestone,” said Johnson & Johnson Sdn Bhd managing director Chin Keat Chyuan.

“Parental leave truly allows us to live our values by putting people first – helping employees live well across their whole lives.

“We understand that supporting our employees extends beyond work and into other aspects of their lives,” added Chin.

With the leave policy, new fathers at Johnson & Johnson Sdn Bhd are now entitled to a maximum eight weeks Global Parental Leave within one year from the birth of the child.

Female employees are entitled to 26 working days Global Parental Leave within one year from the birth of the child, in addition to the mandatory 60 calendar days maternity leave, as outlined in the Employment Act 1955 in Malaysia.

Female or male employees are entitled to a maximum eight weeks of Global Parental Leave within one year from the date of adoption for a child aged up to 17 years.

By extending parental leave benefits to fathers and adoptive parents, Johnson & Johnson also strengthens its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and support for the modern-day family .

“At Johnson & Johnson we are making long term investments in our employees, prioritizing flexibility, fostering growth and sustained engagement, while meeting the needs of working families. We are proud to continually lead the way in providing progressive benefits to our employees, which in turn, creates healthier families and communities across the world,” said Johnson & Johnson Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer Peter Fasolo.

This enhancement is intended to complement existing maternity, paternity and adoption leave that may already be available locally, and ensure that a minimum amount of bonding time is available to all new parents worldwide.

In a 2013 study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, it found that the level of interaction between father-infant at age three months can predict whether the child will exhibit behavioural problems at the age of one.

The effect in the lack of father-infant engagement tends to be stronger for boys than for girls, suggesting that boys are more susceptible to the influence of their father from a very early age.

“By continually raising the bar on our family benefits we offer, Johnson & Johnson is setting the agenda for others to follow,” said Fasolo.
