KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is set to become a key ammonia producer in the region with a proposed second plant to manufacture the chemical at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park.
Assistant Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Bolkiah Ismail said the USD800mil (RM3.4bil) plant was expected to be operational by 2021.
He said Sabah Oil and Gas Development Sdn Bhd (SOGDC) that was overseeing progress at the industrial park had received three proposals for the second ammonia plant.
Bolkiah said the proposals were from industrial giant Eurochem, a consortium of China chemical firms and Markisa from Petronas.
At the same time, he said SOGDC had been looking for investors to set up operations in the 1,200ha industrial park, particularly if they use natural gas as their primary source of processing.
