MIRI: Organisations and individuals from various sectors should join forces with Miri City Council in formulating ways to promote Miri city and boost local economy for the future, said mayor Adam Yii.
He said this during the first organising committee meeting for Visit Miri Year 2018, where more than 80 representatives from various government agencies, community associations, tourism-related organisations and commercial houses were in attendance.
The organising committee consisted of Yii, deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad, Miri City Council secretary Morshidi Frederick and treasurer Siti Suhana Rosli.
To kick off the campaign with a bang, Yii said the council, in collaboration with Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd, were planning to hold the year-end countdown as well as the launch of Visit Miri Year 2018.
“The launch will be held on Dec 30 and 31 at Marina Park City Miri Central Park with the tentative theme ‘Unique and Diversified Art and Culture of Miri’.
“Some of the events and activities proposed for the countdown and launch include musical fireworks, a picnic bazaar promoting local delicacies, food trucks, an art bazaar promoting local arts and crafts, buskers promoting Miri music and culture, a kids activity zone, stage performances and talent time,” he said.
The launch was expected to attract 50,000 people.
Sub-committees were also set up to plan and prepare the event.
Yii said the council would consider suggestions given by members and look into drawing up a calendar of events for next year.
He added that the council would also conduct a beach cleaning exercise as well as spruce up shophouses and repaint buildings.
“Other suggestions include organising cultural events featuring traditional dancers, rituals such as weddings and traditional costumes from various ethnic groups in Miri,” he said.
