THE cycling community in Penang is relishing a new-found sense of acceptance and exclusivity as a two-wheeler.
The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has installed traffic light indicators of bicycle crossing at four traffic light junctions in George Town.
They are Jalan Gurdwara-Jalan C.Y. Choy, Jalan Macalister-Jalan Magazine, Jalan Penang-Jalan Magazine, Jalan Datuk Keramat-Jalan Magazine.
Council Infrastructure and Traffic Committee alternate chairman Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said four more traffic lights would be installed with similar indicators by this month.
They are junctions at Jalan Magazine-Jalan Gurdwara, Jalan Magazine-Jalan Ria, Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong-Lebuh Lintang (in front of 1st Avenue Mall) and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling- Lebuh Chulia.
“With the indicators, cyclists can now cross the busy intersections with peace of mind.
“The initiative is to indicate that those crossings are also meant for cyclists as well as pedestrians.
“The council’s Infrastructure and Traffic Committee has approved the installation,” he said.
G Club Penang Cyclists chairman Datuk Dr Lim Seh Guan said the installation of such indicators was a small step towards accepting the cycling community.
“It is a significant gesture by the local authority to create awareness on the presence of cyclists to other road users.
“At the same time, it also enforces into cyclists the need to obey traffic lights too,” he said.
He added that he hoped such indicators would be installed at all traffic lights throughout the state.
