The church’s fundraising committee chairman John Lau said the project, which started last September, was estimated to cost RM2.5mil.
“We have raised RM2mil while the balance of RM500,000 would be covered by the church.
“There will be a soft opening on Christmas Eve,” he told reporters during the church’s raffle draw on Tuesday.
Lau said out of 250,000 raffle tickets that were printed, 140,000 had been sold.
“We managed to raise RM700,000 from the sale of the raffle tickets,” he said, adding that each raffle ticket cost RM5.
A total of 40 prizes and also the grand prize of a brand new Mazda 2 were drawn by volunteers.
The Church of the Assumption is the third oldest Catholic church in the country.
The oldest is the St Peter’s Church, followed by the St Francis Xavier’s Church. Both churches are located in Melaka.
