BUY tickets for a charity food fair to raise RM200,000 for the Handicapped Children’s Centre Penang to continue its operations.

The centre will hold the fair from 9am to 3pm on Aug 20 at its premises in Grove Road.

Its president Puan Sri Raihanatul Habshiah said 65 stalls would be selling food and other items during the event.

She said the centre was now depending on its depleting reserves to pay for its expenses which now totalled RM500,000 annually as donations from the public had dropped by 50% over the last two years.

She said the expenses were higher previously but had been cut down by having staff members do multiple duties.

Raihanatul said the centre received an annual allocation of RM99,000 from the Federal Government while its other funds were from public donations.

“We have been carrying out various activities to raise funds,” she told a recent press conference on the food fair.

The centre, which provides schooling and vocational training for the disabled, has 57 students aged between four and 19 in five classes, 10 teachers and six administrative staff members.

Raihanatul said the centre also provided workshop training for disabled students to make products which were bought by several factories and thus giving them a source of income.

“The students also get RM350 from the Welfare Department as OKU benefits since they are working,” she added.

Those wishing to make donations or buy the food fair tickets at RM20 per booklet can call the centre at 04-8282270.
