FORMED three decades ago by philanthropist Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah with the belief and understanding that education is vital to the country’s progress, the Sunway Education Group (SEG) has since grown by leaps and bounds with a total of 16 institutions today.
This includes Sunway University, Sunway College, Sunway International School, Monash University Malaysia and the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
SEG is owned and governed by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF), Malaysia’s largest education-focused social enterprise.
Imbued with the guiding principles of giving to society through education, the JCF has disbursed more than RM270mil in scholarships to thousands of deserving students.
The amount continues to grow as the foundation strives to provide more students with opportunities for a brighter future.
Cheah, the founding trustee of JCF and chancellor of Sunway University, is a stalwart supporter of the nation’s education goals and aims to ensure sustainable quality education for the present and future generations of students.
He has pledged to disburse RM1bil in scholarships in his lifetime and this year, in celebration of SEG’s 30th anniversary, the foundation has pledged to award RM57mil more in scholarships for this year.
In its journey to where it is today and following its aim towards becoming the country’s international education hub, Sunway University has been collaborating with world-renowned institutions in its efforts to provide quality higher education.
Through its partnership and collaboration with world-class institutions such as Lancaster University and Le Cordon Bleu International, the university offers holistic education with international recognition.
The university, which is continuously moving forward in its aim to become the country’s international education hub, also has academic collaborations with University of Oxford, University of Cambridge and Harvard University.
These partnerships have paved the way for academic and cultural exchanges for not only Sunway University, but other institutions under SEG.
Through these collaborations, students and staff are able to gain international exposure and learn from world-renowned professionals without having to leave the country.
SEG is growing in terms of programmes offered and student population. In delivering quality higher education, institutions under the group have received various accolades.
Sunway University has received recognition and is placed on par with long-established international institutions.
In the 2015/2016 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Stars results, the university was awarded an overall rating of four stars out of a maximum of five stars, receiving individual five-star ratings in the “teaching”, “employability” and “facilities” categories.
In the Student Barometer Survey Entry Wave 2016, a global benchmark for student experience, it was revealed that Sunway University and Sunway College were ranked number one in Asia in six categories – programme organisation, library, laboratories, technology, social facilities and study sense.
The survey, undertaken by i-graduate, tracked feedback from over 188,031 students from 196 institutions in 17 countries.
In Asia alone, more than 55,000 students from 19 institutions participated in the survey.
In the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) rating exercise for Malaysian Higher Education Institutions, Sunway University is rated Tier 5 (Excellent).
Sunway College was awarded six stars in the college-based rating and general programmes cluster in the Malaysian Quality Evaluation System for Private Colleges (MyQUEST) 2014/2015.
Sunway College offers six internationally recognised pre-university programmes, globally recognised professional accounting programmes through its Sunway TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence, and undergraduate twinning and MBA degree programmes with Victoria University, Australia.
With Sunway College as part of the Sunway Education Group, community service forms an integral part of the institution’s educational philosophy and curriculum.
“The development of students’ character, integrity and self-confidence is an essential part of the institution’s goals.
“Students are encouraged to make meaningful contributions to the community, society and country. Sunway is a diverse and vibrant campus community. Students will be immersed in learning, not only in the classrooms, but also out of them.
“We host and organise various international events on campus, where students will be able to learn first-hand from visiting professors, industry leaders, young professionals and even their peers,” said Sunway Education Group and Sunway University senior executive director Dr Elizabeth Lee.
