THE ‘Konsert Kopitiam’ is back by popular demand, bringing together living culture and talents from Penang.
Konsert Kopitiam 2017 co-ordinator Yasunari Rajendra said the ‘Konsert Kopitiam’ (concerts in coffee shops), which made its debut at George Town Festival 2014, would take place in five local coffee shops.
“Each concert is a mini variety show of between 90 and 120 minutes duration and anchored by a home-grown popular band, interspersed with presentations by Penang poets, storytellers, stand-up comedians and a magician.
“There will be portrait artists doing sketches and cartoons as well as a pop-up bookstall offering books about Penang at the concerts,” he said when contacted,
Yasunari added that the concerts would reflect the rich multi-lingual and multi-ethnic diversity of the state through songs and recitals in English, Malay, Hokkien and Tamil.
“The coffee shop venues were hand-picked for their historical location and significance.”
The coffee shops selected are Asia Cafe in Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (Aug 5), Ho Ho in Lorong Bagan Luar 2, Butterworth (Aug 12), Hock Leong Yen at the King Street-China Street junction (Aug 18), Ping Hooi in Carnarvon Street (Aug 25) and Hwa Pin in Church Street (Sept 2).
Among those slated to appear at the concerts are Nada Irama, D’Thaveras, Redwood, Sweet Memories, Gypsy Eyes, writer Himanshu Bhatt, magician Barry Khoo, activist Datuk Dr Anwar Fazal, guitarist Patrick Daniel, saxophonist William Scully, cartoonist Azmi Hussin, comedian Murali Ram and many more.
The Konsert Kopitiam 2017 is one of the programmes for George Town Festival.
All performances are from 6pm to 8pm. Admission is free.
