Some 550 exhibitors, 36,000 visitors and RM1mil in sales are expected at the 18th International Architecture, Interior Design and Building Exhibition (Archidex), which opens in Kuala Lumpur today.

And eight visitors to the trade fair will get a chance to take home a Tag Heuer watch each.

Held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre until July 22, the four-day exhibition brings together architects, interior designers, property developers and building industry players from 14 countries, including Austria, China, Singapore and South Korea.

C.I.S Network Sdn Bhd president Datuk Vincent Lim said transactions this year was expected to rise to over RM1mil.

“We also hope to see a 5% increase in terms of visitors compare with last year’s number of close to 34,300,” he said.

Among the highlights is the inaugural Architalent, an architecture student competition in search of talented and inspiring personalities from the schools of architecture in Malaysia.

Themed “Social Architecture”, the competition invites participating teams to generate thoughtful and provocative ideas for densely populated cities like Kuala Lumpur.

Out of 70 submissions received, 20 finalists have been selected to present their ideas to a panel of industry-led judges tomorrow (July 20) at Plenary Theatre. The top three teams will be announced on the same day.

Other activities lined up include Biz@Archidex, which highlights the latest industry trends and products, and Focus Forum@Archidex, which looks at regulating construction materials and products under CIDB Act 520 (Amendment 2011) and the Certificate of Standard Compliance (PPSi).

Eight Tag Heuer watches are up for grab this year for visitors. All that registered visitors have to to do to be in contention is to get a contest card from one of the exhibition’s registration and info counter and have it stamped at the CPD Point Counters in Hall 6 and 9.

“Through constant improvement, strategic growth and a strong vision, Archidex consistently delivers its promise to support and grow this industry beyond borders.

“Today, what was once a small local exhibition has now transformed into one of Malaysia's largest and most successful trade exhibitions recognised in the Asean region.

“Archidex continues to strive and it currently occupies a highly coveted position at the forefront of the regional’s robust architecture, design and building industry,” said Ministry of Works Public Works Department deputy director general (specialised sector) Ratna Mahyuddin, who represented Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin during the opening ceremony.

Archidex, a key component of the annual Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival (KLAF), is jointly organised by PAM together with trade and lifestyle exhibition organiser C.I.S Network Sdn Bhd.

Archidex is endorsed by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation and supported by the Works Ministry, Tourism and Culture Ministry, the Malaysian Conventions and Exhibitions Bureau and the Malaysia Green Building Confederation.

Spanish brand, Roca, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, is the principal partner for the third year running while Malaysia Airlines is the official airline.

Opening hours for Archidex 2017 is from 10am to 7pm for trade visitors.

It will be opened to the public on July 21 and 22.
