UEM Edgenta Berhad has given out RM100,000 from its Zakat Fund to Penang Hospital meant for the Asnaf (qualified group) patients seeking medical treatment at the hospital.

Its managing director and chief executive officer Azmir Merican said the company also gave a similar amount to Asnaf patients of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh.

“Both hospitals and the community can be rest assured that our contribution is not a one-off gesture.

“We plan to continue this initiative in the foreseeable future.

“As a responsible corporate citizen and aware of the rising cost of living, the company is pleased to be able to lend a helping hand to Asnaf patients.

“We hope our small contribution will lift their financial burden.

“We hope to enable them to have the medical attention they deserve and increase their quality of life,” he said after presenting the contribution to Penang Hospital director Datuk Dr Norsidah Ismail at Penang Nursing College in Jalan Residensi on Monday.

UEM Edgenta is the provider of hospital support services to 32 public hospitals in the northern region.

Among the services are facility engineering maintenance, biomedical engineering maintenance, cleansing services, healthcare waste management, linen and laundry services, and facility management.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya, who witnessed the presentation, said the ministry spent between RM30mil and RM40mil a year to help those in need of medical aid.

“I hope other companies will come forward to contribute to the charity fund that we created at every hospital and also at the national level,” he said at a press conference after the ceremony.
