Contract extension expected for local government chiefs

It will be business as usual at the helm of two major local authorities in the Klang Valley.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz’s tenure will be extended by another two years.

The former Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) director-general took office as the 11th mayor of Kuala Lumpur on July 18, 2015, replacing Tan Sri Ahmad Phesal Talib.

Amin Nordin’s contract is due to expire on July 18.

According to an informed source, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor will be endorsing the extension.

“They are awaiting the green light from the Public Services Department and the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“The minister is very happy with Amin Nordin’s performance.

“He has a good track record, is one of the few who can do the job well. He is hardworking too. He comes in at 7am and leaves late every day.
“People like his ‘no frills’ style as he is a humble and simple person,” said the source from the FT Ministry.

Under Amin Nordin’s tenure, DBKL has won many awards at international and national levels.

At the recent Federal Territories Ministry Civil Service Innovation and Excellence Day celebration 2016, DBKL came out tops in four of six categories, including the Most Innovative Agency.

The past two years proved challenging for DBKL after one of its senior directors was charged with corruption.

Since then, DBKL has rolled out new rules to eliminate bribery in its administration.

For example, officers and contractors are required to sign integrity pledges.

DBKL has been working with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to monitor officers and contractors’ performance, especially those seen to be living beyond their means.

Amin Nordin started his career in the civil service as a deputy director in the landscaping department in 1978 when he was 22 years old.

He served under 10 mayors, and was former mayor Tan Sri Elyas Omar’s special officer for four years.

Amin Nordin moved up the ranks swiftly, serving as director for several departments before assuming the post of deputy director-general in charge of city administration in 2000.

He is only the second DBKL officer to be appointed mayor.

In 2004, DBKL director-general Datuk Ruslin Hasan created history when he was named the seventh Kuala Lumpur mayor, taking over from Datuk Mohmad Shaid Taufek.

Over at the country’s administrative capital, Putrajaya Corporation president (PPj) Datuk Seri Hasim Ismail is also said to soon have his contract extended by a year.

Hasim succeeded Tan Sri Aseh Che Mat as PPj president on Aug 1, 2015, and pledged to improve safety issues of the administrative capital as well as transform Putrajaya into a cultural centre by making the city a hub for such programmes and activities.

Under his leadership, Putrajaya organised more than 200 events in 2016, including 33 international and 45 national events, all through several smart partnerships with private and government sectors.

PPj went on to win 16 awards last year in various segments including recognition for management and admnistrative excellence, innovation and cleanliness.

These included a five-star rating in the Local Authorities Star Rating System, Financial Management Accountability Index 2016 award, and International Quality Control Circle 2016.

In 2015, he oversaw Putrajaya’s 20th anniversary celebration of being established as the Federal Government's administrative centre.

Hasim has more than three decades of government service under his belt and has held the post of Federal Territories Land and Mines director as well as Home Ministry deputy secretary-general (management) where he was directly involved in policies and development relating to Putrajaya.
