Farmer found a day after going missing

SIBU: An elderly farmer who was reported missing after he went to the jungle to collect wild ferns in Saratok was finally found by a search and rescue team led by the Fire and Rescue Department.

The 73-year-old man, Mawar Ranggai, had ventured out from his longhouse, Rh Junaidi Melina, Disso Awik in Saratok at about 9am on Wednesday.

Panic ensued when he failed to return home by 6pm that day.

The family members conducted a search for him covering an area of 2km but failed to locate him.

Saratok Fire and Rescue Department chief Nazry Mohamat said his department received the distress call from the victim’s family members at 10pm on Wednesday.

A search and rescue mission which involved three firemen, four policemen, 50 Rela members and 20 villagers was subsequently carried out to look for him.

“At about 9.32am yesterday, our operation commander reported that the victim had been found about 1.2km from the Fire and Rescue Department control post. He is reported to be very weak with a leg injury,” he added.

Nazry said the elderly man was sent to the hospital for medical observation.
