TO make this festive season even more special, a mall in Penang has turned its concourse into a little traditional kampung complete with mini huts, fishing boats and nets.

The Hari Raya decorations at Queensbay Mall brought cheer to about 70 underprivileged children on a visit.

When the children saw famous Malaysian cartoon characters Upin and Ipin waiting there to greet them, they could not contain their joy.

The children aged between four and 11 were from Rumah Kanak-Kanak Taman Bakti, Rumah Jagaan Nasyiatul and Pusat Jagaan Permata Kasih.

Queensbay marketing communications senior executive Jamie Yap said Upin and Ipin would also greet visitors tomorrow and Sunday at 1pm and 5pm at the ground floor central atrium.

CapitaLand Retail Malaysia mall management (northern region) general manager Selina Ng said the event was part of their corporate social responsibility programme.

“Our team believes in the spirit of sharing and caring, especially during the festive season,” she said.

The children were later taken to Pizza Hut for buka puasa. Each also received a goodie bag containing stationery.

Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon presented a donation of RM9,000 from the mall to the three charitable organisations.
