THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is giving out ‘RM1mil’ each to those who take part in its 2018 Budget Survey but they won’t become instant millionaires.
This is because the RM1mil sum is in the form of five RM100,000, eight RM50,000 and five RM20,000 stickers which are given out with the survey form.
Participants then decide via their stickers how much funding the various council projects, programmes and services should get, based on a list provided by MBPP.
There are five categories to choose from – upgrading of roads and amenities; maintenance of roads and street lighting; provision of facilities such as those for the disabled and senior citizens; recycling, heritage and community programmes; and fogging, pest control and garbage collection services.
It is a novel way by the council to get the public to help it prepare its budget for next year.
Council mayor Datuk Patahiyah Ismail said it was up to the public to place the stickers according to the categories they feel need more funds.
“This will not be the actual budget but a way for the public to signal their funding priorities.
“As the budget is still in the preparatory stage, MBPP would like to get feedback from the public to help it prepare a more comprehensive budget.
“Through this survey, we hope to provide a budget for services and projects that will be more effective and satisfy the public,” she said.
She was speaking during an interactive budget survey programme in Komtar for community security and development committees and selected rate- payers on Monday.
Patahiyah said the MBPP 2018 Budget Survey forms could be obtained from any MBPP counter. The survey can also be done on the council website (www.mbpp.gov.my).
The closing date for the survey is June 30. For details, call the MBPP treasury department at 04-2592192.
