THE Soo Ewe Jin Scholarship for aspiring journalists received a RM30,000 funding from the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) on Tuesday.
MRCA president Datuk Garry Chua Kah Seng presented the cheque to Star Media Group editor-in-chief Datuk Leanne Goh during a ceremony at the Star Gallery in Menara Star, Petaling Jaya.
Chua said he was a reader of the late Soo Ewe Jin’s columns in The Star and an admirer of Soo’s visions.
“I feel that he touched a lot of people’s hearts.
“You can see that through his columns, he was very sincere, and I can see that he was a good person,” he said.
Chua said that MRCA decided to donate to the scholarship to encourage the growth of more young journalists who can embody Soo’s spirit in journalism.
“Journalism touches people’s hearts.
“It impacts a lot of people’s thinking and (it helps with) character-building.
“If you have more of such journalists, I think this world could be a better place,” he added.
The RM30,000 from MRCA will go towards funding a deserving undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
The Soo Ewe Jin Scholarship was set up on April 7 under the umbrella of the Star Education Fund and Yayasan Universiti Sains Malaysia in memory of Soo, The Star’s executive editor and columnist, who passed away after battling cancer last November.
Chua said there needed to be more emphasis on humanity and humane values, not just in journalism but in today’s world, just as Soo had emphasised in his writings.
“We should go back to basics (of humanity). We are talking about human values.
“All of us are so busy chasing after wealth and in the end, we miss ‘smelling the roses’, like Soo used to say,” he said.
