MIRI: A top cop in Sarawak has confirmed that a large number of massage parlours in the state are fronts for prostitution activities.
The Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is carrying out a series of raids in major cities throughout Sarawak to clamp down on reflexology centres that functioned as prostitution dens.
State CID Chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Dev Kumar said yesterday that 12 raids were carried out since April 1 with the latest one conducted on Monday night.
The evidences collected showed that the centres were into sexual vices, he said.
“The Sarawak CID teams are knocking on the doors of massage parlours and reflexology centres throughout Sarawak suspected of offering prostitution services.
“These centres are operating under the guise of providing body and foot massages but are actually offering sexual services.
He said the police launched 12 anti-vice raids in Ops Noda in Sibu, Miri, Kuching, Bintulu and Padawan.
“In Miri, there were three separate raids all led by teams from our State CID headquarters, while the rest of the raids were done by district CID units,” he said.
SAC Dev said so far the prostitutes arrested were 42 foreign women from China, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
He added that sex-related items had been seized in these raids.
“The Sarawak CID will go all out to nail those behind such vice operations. The raids will be intensified,” he said.
Meanwhile, concerned residents in Miri city are questioning why these so-called massage parlours are allowed to spread into residential estates.
Housewife Ai Ling told The Star that in her housing estate in Kuala Baram district, 20km north of Miri city, many foreign women were seen plying their “trade” at night in front of shops advertised as reflexology centres.
SAC Dev said the police would also carry out raids in the suburban areas.
