MORE than 100 Year Six pupils have received financial support from Penang-based developer Aspen Group for their Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination.
The pupils from nine selected primary schools in Pulau Betong were presented with RM40,000 in sponsorship from the Lestari Foundation managed by Pulau Betong assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Farid Saad.
The schools are SK Balik Pulau, SK Tan Sri Awang Had Salleh, SK Genting, SK Kongsi, SK St George, SK Titi Teras, SK Sungai Korok, SK Sungai Rusa and SK Sungai Pinang.
Aspen Group chairman Datuk Seri Nazir Ariff said the cash would go towards setting up extra classes for the pupils.
“The classes on Bahasa Malaysia, English, Science and Mathematics will be conducted every Saturday.
“Part of the sponsorship will also be used to provide allowances for the teachers and food and drinks for the pupils,” he said, adding that some money would also go towards printing material and hall rental for the classes.
Nazir said the aim of the sponsorship was to give the pupils a thorough five-month preparation for the UPSR.
He handed over the contributions to Farid at Lestari Hall in Balik Pulau recently.
Farid lauded the group’s initiative in keeping the young generation in mind.
“Always, Year Six pupils are left out as UPSR is not seen as an important examination.
“Actually, UPSR is a stepping stone for the kids,” he said.
