SIBU: An automatic landing system is urgently needed at Sibu airport, said Chief Minister’s political secretary Michael Tiang.

Tiang suggested this in response to an incident where a Malaysia Airlines aircraft skidded when attempting to land during a downpour. The airport was closed for 27 hours causing many travellers from Sibu to postpone their journey.

He said an automatic landing system would help to prevent a similar incident in future.

“This was not the first time an aircraft skidded on the airport runway during heavy rain. There was an incident a few years ago, also involving a commercial aircraft.

“It it timely for an automatic landing system be installed at the airport,” he added.

Tiang said he would write to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai requesting the device for Sibu airport.

He also expressed his disappointment with Sibu and Lanang MPs, who did not raise this matter and the chicken wings dumping incident in Parliament.

“I am more disappointed that our ministers and Sibu Municipal Council had remained quiet on both incidents.
