MIRI: The Sarawak government has been urged to draw up a long-term blueprint on green-energy and to pledge that no more megadams will be built in Sarawak.

Save Sarawak Rivers chairman Peter Kallang said the path of pursueing green-energy should be the direction towards the future for Sarawak.

Speaking in conjunction with the International Rivers’ Day celebration on Tuesday, he said a blueprint for green energy from the administration of Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Openg would be welcomed by all.

“Abang Johari has indicated that he wants to see higher use of green energy for the state. We support this idea if it does not involve building anymore mega dams.

“Last year, Tan Sri Adenan Satem cancelled plans for the building of Baram Dam following three years of protests from the Baram natives.

“The Baram Dam project would have drowned more than 40,000ha of forests.

“At least 20,000 people from 25 settlements would have been displaced.

“We are happy that Adenan had listened to us over that Baram Dam issue, Kallang said.

Save Sarawak Rivers celebrated the International Rivers’ Day by holding a dinner with Baram native villagers.

Kallang said his network believes that a combination of micro-dams plus solar energy and biomass energy would be able to meet Sarawak’s future energy needs.

“There is really no need to build huge dams anymore.

“In the case of Sarawak, we can have enough electricity if we combine micro dams with solar energy and biomass energy sources.

“The state government must do more to generate these alternative energy sources,” he added.

Kallang said there were already efforts in the US to dismantle big dams.
