People file complaint at MACC to object chicken abbatoir project

An action committee who are against a chicken abbatoir project at Selayang market has filed a complaint with the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) today.

The committee comprised 27 non-governmental organisations.

The location of the project was against the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry's guidelines, which required such establishments to be at least 500 metres away from residential areas.

Although they (the committee) supports the government's initiative to have the facility, they are worried that if there were a bird flu outbreak, the health of the people in the surrounding area would be affected.

"We are also worried about the abbatoir attracting flies, which could lead to other health problems," said its information officer Abdul Aziz Mohd Alias.

He added that they have written to different government departments including the Environment and Prime Minister's Department but did not receive any reply.

"We want MACC to investigate the project and our lawyers will be filing a judicial review soon, too," he told reporters after sending the complaint letter to MACC in Putrajaya.

Cheshire Selangor Charity House president Datin Paduka Khatijah Sulaieman said the project was very close to the home and would affect the health of its occupants, especially the disabled.

“We have been operating for over 50 years and the proximity of the slaughterhouse will affect the air quality that can have adverse effects on our residents. We appeal to the government to change the location,” she said.

StarMetro quoted Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Socio-economic Development executive director Datuk Ibrahim Yusoff saying that the Health Ministry and the Environment Department had given their approval for the project, which was scheduled to be completed by end of the year.
