Taking love to greater heights

A wedding photo taken on the rooftop of Komtar with a spectacular evening view of George Town.

ABOUT 2,000 years ago, young ladies could have liked Chap Goh Meh best.

It was one of the rare days they were allowed out of the protective privacy of their homes, walk about the streets and offer prayers in temples.

Unfortunately for hopeful bachelors, the comely ladies were invariably chaperoned by fierce aunties and amahs. So the guys loitered at respectable distances, hoping to exchange a glance, a smile or maybe even a wink with the maidens.

Who is that girl? From which family? How old is she? Who is her father? These were the kind of questions young men would ask the chaperones of girls who took their hearts away with their shy smiles.

It was the stuff of love, romance and fantasies that led to Chap Goh Meh being seen as the Chinese Valentine’s Day.

To keep the custom of courtship alive, The Top@Komtar is holding Traditions of Love, a reenactment of a traditional Chinese wedding at the atrium area on Level 5, Komtar, on Saturday starting from 4.30pm.

The public will witness a full-fledged ceremony, from the procession of the groom and his entourage as they pick up the bride to the tea ceremony.

The bride and groom will serve tea to their elders and later lock arms and drink from a nuptial cup to toast to a happy marriage.

There will also be a matchmaker, the central figure in Chinese weddings, who will guide the couple throughout the ceremony.

The Top@Komtar is also offering an exclusive dining experience for lovebirds at the rooftop of the tower. This starts at 5.30pm and is priced at RM388 per couple.

It is only open to 50 couples.

If the weather is not ideal, the dinner will be moved to the observatory deck on Level 65, which also boasts of panoramic views of the city and island.

Included in the package is a cocktail dinner with sparkling wine and an exclusive photography session, sponsored by Kuang Yee Bridal Collections at the Rainbow Skywalk and Orchestra of Dreams at Level 68.

The happy couples will receive two 4R printouts to mark their Chap Goh Meh celebrations.
