KOTA KINABALU: The People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) play important roles in uncountable occasions throughout the country and should be appreciated.
Local Government and Housing minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said RELA members assisted the police and armed forces not only in maintaining security, but also in time of emergencies and disasters like flood and earthquakes.
“Your sacrifice for the last 45 years had finally paid off when Rela was upgraded to a department in 2013,” he said during a closing ceremony for the Training the Trainers course at the state’s Rela Training Centre in Gayang near here.
He said their roles were appreciated and he was sure there were many more good things to come for the future of the Rela department.
Hajiji also commended the dedication of Rela members in carrying out every duty although they were only paid allowances and not salaries.
Meanwhile, some 170 Rela members throughout Sabah attended the course.
Mohd Redzuan Markus from Labuan won both the Best Overall Trainee and Best Male Trainee awards while Mazuin Samsuri from Sandakan was the Best Female Trainee.
Also present were Sabah Rela director Jimmy Anak Jupiter Sambau and Rela Training Centre commandant Laungah Kandar.
