MORE than 15,000 people are expected to take part in various traditional Chinese cultural activities during the Penang Chinese New Year Celebration 2017.
The event organised by the Penang Chinese Clan Council (PCCC) and supported by the state government will be held on Feb 3 from 4pm to 11.30pm.
Among the activities to be hosted by 18 clans are language lessons, street performances and exhibitions, pastry making,calligraphy classes, chess tournament,storytelling sessions and workshops.
PCCC president Dr Chang Wei Ru, who is also the event organising chairman, said the celebration falls on the seventh day of the lunar calendar.
He said the event, which had been initially held bi-annually since 1999, was now an annual affair.
“This will be our 15th time organising the event and we are expecting a big crowd.
“We want to promote and introduce the traditional Chinese customs and culture to the locals and tourists,” he said during a recent press conference at Kang Har Tong clan office in Jelutong.
Several roads like Cannon Street, Armenian Street, Chulia Street, King Street, Church Street, Bishop Street and Penang Street will be closed during the event.
