SEVEN awards for Retail Service and Courtesy Excellence were given away during the Malaysia Retailers Association (MRA) 34th anniversary dinner.

Gaining the award for “Best Fashion and Fashion Accessories” for their branch in Viva City Mall, Habib Jewels also emerged as the “Best Overall Retail Outlet” for the same store.

Habib managing director Datuk Seri Meer Sadik Habib said he felt that Habib’s winning factor had a lot to do with the way the staff were trained in customer service.

“I have always believed in going back to the core values of honesty and sincerity.

“People buy jewellery for investment and adornment but above all, they buy jewelry from people they can trust.

“Our people are trained to not just be sales people but proper consultants,” he said.

He added that his staff become experts in every aspect of jewellery so that they can answer any question or particular needs of a customer. This makes them valuable advisors to each customer.

“I am very proud of the team, especially because the winning showroom is one of our new ones that opened in Kuching last year,” he said.

Other award recipients included Tangs 1Utama for Best Department Store, Mydin Wholesale Hypermarket Bukit Mertajam for Best Hypermarket, Guardian Berjaya Times Square for Best Pharmacy, Guardian The Curve, Mutiara Damansara for Best Specialty Store, and Jason’s Food Hall, Bangsar Shopping Centre for Best Supermarket.

Attended by 1,300 people and 200 members from various participating stores, MRA 34th Anniversary Dinner chairman Cynthia Hwang said the dinner was a significant networking platform for the retailers.

“MRA is a close-knit community of 200 members. This is a good time for everyone to meet and get to know one another regardless of which business area they represent.

“For example, a person from manufacturing could have a discussion with a person who majors in sales and together, they could discuss ideas on how to grow each other’s businesses,” she said.

On top of welcoming guests to the dinner, MRA president Tan Sri William Cheng announced that MRA would play host to the 18th Asia Pacific Retailers Convention and Exhibition (APRCE) next year.

“I am happy to announce that MRA will be hosting the 18th APRCE at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Oct 25 to 27 next year.

“It is a world-class regional event for the retail industry and next year’s convention will be the biggest ever in Malaysia as we are expecting about 3,000 delegates.

“This will be a good place for retailer practitioners to exchange ideas on e-commerce, DNA retailing, consumer behaviour and other contemporary topics.

“We welcome all our members and retailers to participate in the convention as delegates, strategic partners or exhibitors, or even as all three,” he said.
