Teenage schoolgirls learn the facts of life

Dr Daroyah says last year’s Health Ministry statistics revealed that 3,980 teens between the ages of 10 and 19 had a child outside wedlock.

“This shows that knowledge among teens in the country on sexual and reproductive health is still low. Hence this Big Girls Talk programme,” she said.

Among the objectives of the programme is to help teenage girls make wise choices when it comes to high-risk activities such as premarital sex and dating, as well as ways to deal with problems such as violence, sexual harassment and exploitation.

“It is also to help them know the implication of premarital sex, distinguish between love and lust and learn about menstruation.

“Every teen needs to know about the consequences from activities that will result in teen pregnancies, hence this programme must be expanded so that more teenage girls can improve their self-esteem and become women of high-esteem,” she said.

Sisterhood Alliance was the facilitator for the programme.

Its secretary Zamzana Mohd Arifin said they designed the module and there are plans to have counsellors in future programmes.

The programme will also be held in Shah Alam, Ampang, Hulu Selangor and Klang.
