AN assemblyman was asked to leave the State Assembly for a day for the first time since 2013.

Datuk Roslan Saidin (BN-Pinang Tunggal) Roslan got into a shouting match during the debate on the motion to call for the release of Bersih 2.0 chief Maria Chin Abdullah.

He was then told to leave the August hall by Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang (PKR-Bukit Tambun).

Five BN members followed Roslan out.

Law told reporters later that it was the first time he had ordered a representative to leave since he took office in 2013.

“It was a pity but I was forced to do so to maintain the peace in the House.

“I hope this will serve as a reminder to all assemblymen to know their limits while debating,” he told the reporters during the lunch break yesterday.

Roslan had a heated argument with Dr Afif Bahardin (PKR-Seberang Jaya) after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng tabled a motion without notice to call for the release of Maria Chin, who is being held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma).

The motion also condemns Maria’s confinement without trial for 28 days.

While debating the motion, Dr Afif condemned Sosma and started slamming Umno.

Riled by Dr Afif’s remarks, Roslan stood up and told Dr Afif “not to forget his roots”.

“Don’t forget that your father (was from) Umno,” he yelled.

Dr Afif became visibly unhappy and asked Roslan to retract his statement, saying “don’t drag my father into this”.

R.S.N. Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima) and Soon Lip Chee (DAP-Jawi) also stood up to demand that Roslan retract his remark.

Law then instructed them to sit and told Roslan to leave the House.

Roslan later told a press conference he knows Dr Afif’s background and described Dr Afif as an “Umno product”.

“I know his origins and I don’t want him to be a ‘kacang melupakan kulit’ (someone who forgets his roots)”.

Opposition Leader Datuk Jahara Hamid (BN-Telok Ayer Tawar) said they found the Speaker’s decision unfair as only Roslan was kicked out when others had also shouted.

“Punishing Roslan seems like he was the only one who had done wrong,” she added.

Dr Afif later told reporters that his parents were Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) staff members and he was also a UiTM graduate.

“They were civil servants and definitely not Umno members.”

Maria was detained on Friday in a pre-Bersih 5.0 swoop by police on several Opposition leaders and activists and is now held under Sosma at an undisclosed location.

Meanwhile in a press statement, state Gerakan acting youth chief Jason Loo said a “political intervention” was needed in the light of the Attorney-General and the Inspector-General of Police having taken the view that Chin is detained under Sosma.

“We are disturbed by the usage of Sosma on Maria Chin.

“We may disagree with Bersih and Maria Chin but to invoke Sosma to detain her is a gross injustice,” he said.

He added that the decision to use Sosma on civil movement was unacceptable.
