THE Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) successfully commemorated its anniversary in style to reflect the many great milestones it has achieved throughout its journey.

MRCA captured its 24 years of hard work, dedication and commitment in supporting the development and globalisation of the retail and franchise industry, witnessed by more than 1,000 guests including chief executive officers, corporate senior management, entrepreneurs and business associates.

Held at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, guests lived up to the night’s theme of “Opulence and Enchantment” as the men all looked dapper in suits while the women were dressed to impress in their evening gowns.

“As the current president, I wish to bring fresh perspectives and directions to MRCA, with more professionalism. We aim to be result-oriented, accountable, and more engaging and inclusive towards our members, media, patrons, sponsors, advisers and associates,” said MRCA president Datuk Garry Chua.

“To continue enriching our members with our six-point action plan, we have just welcomed our outstation members from Johor, and soon from Penang, Sabah and Sarawak.

“We are also touching base with international retail associations including Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong to expand our network and gain better insights into their markets,” he added.

Chua also recapped the activities that took place in the last six months under the new council.

“We had the grand installation night with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as guest of honour.

“There was the business transformation talk and charity concert, the high-profile CEO Night 2016, and the engaging media appreciation event,” Chua noted.

MRCA targets to achieve 350 quality members by year end and 400 by end of 2017.

Present to officiate at the prestigious event was Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.

The organising committee of the event, led by MRCA council member Datuk Winnie Lim, also took time to honour MRCA founder Datuk Eddie Choon with the Visionary Retailer Award; his wife Datin Jennifer Hon with the Inspirational Visionary Founder Support Award, as well as the association’s past presidents with Exemplary Top Retailer Award.

Since two years ago, MRCA has also taken the opportunity to recognise its members and non-members for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the retail industry in its anniversary celebrations.

This year was no exception as it hosted the third MRCA Crown Awards, which was created to cultivate excellent business practices, enabling participating retailers to rise to the challenge, strive for excellence and be on par globally.

This year, there were 11 categories of awards compared with eight in the previous years.

Bagging the Outstanding Innovation Award was Paradise Builders Holding Sdn Bhd while Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd took home the Noble Initiative Award.

The Outstanding Global Venture Award and Outstanding National Growth Award went to Top Glove Corporation Bhd and Optimax Eye Specialist Centre Sdn Bhd respectively.

Meanwhile, KK Supermart and Superstore Sdn Bhd were awarded the Outstanding Brand Award and Impulse Studio Sdn Bhd received the Outstanding Rising Star Award.

Clinching the Outstanding Excellence Award was Adv Fusionex Sdn Bhd, an established multi-award winning IT software group specialising in Analytics and Big Data to bridge the gap between business and technology.

Managing director Datuk Seri Ivan Teh attributed their win to his talented team as well as the company’s work ethics.

“This is an award for excellence and innovation, and that’s something we always strive to do.

“It is doing what we do best, not about being a jack of all trades and master of none. It is really about focusing on quality because once we do that, then the results will come naturally. Our mantra is quality and perseverance, and not about short cuts,” Teh revealed.

Fusionex has also expanded its business to Britain, United States, Singapore, Hong Kong and Europe, and has been listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

As for the Outstanding CSR Award and Outstanding Green Award, they were presented to Poh Kong Holdings Bhd and BMS Organics (FMC Greenland Sdn Bhd) respectively.

Mah Sing Group Berhad group managing director and chief executive Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum bagged the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award in the male category while Quill Group of Companies group managing director Datuk Dr Jennifer Low took the female category.

Leong remarked that it was an honour to receive the award and commended his team for their hard work and effort.

“It is teamwork that drove my group to success. We also need to ensure that we provide our staff with the right training and continue to empower them.

“More importantly, we have to constantly maintain the highest quality and standard for the housing and development that we have undertaken,” he said.

When asked his advice for budding entrepreneurs, he shared that they need to have focus and work hard and smart as both are equally important.

“Also, continue learning as it is crucial in order to acquire more knowledge and upgrade yourself to the next level,” Leong pointed out.

Some of MRCA’s corporate sponsors were Maxis, Maybank, MasterCard and Fusionex while sponsors for the event included Mah Sing Group Bhd, Segi University and College, and Sunway REIT Management Sdn Bhd.
