LEADING mobile-first marketplace Shopee is set to continue its upward trajectory with the region’s first ever Shopee 9.9 Mobile Shopping Day on Sept 9.

Slated to be the biggest mobile shopping festival ever, the online shopping site will offer attractive deals and promotions for 24 hours non-stop, as well as live auctions for mobile phone users, with bids starting from RM9.90, special picks under RM9 and exclusive partner offers.

The mobile auction via Facebook Live will have mobile phones such as Samsung Note 7 and Huawei P9 up for grabs.

Partners such as Maybank, Digi and Tune Protect have also been enlisted to join in the celebration, announced Shopee regional managing director Ian Ho at a press conference.

“Since its launch across South-East Asia and Taiwan in December 2015, Shopee Malaysia has amassed over two million installs.

“Across all markets, there are over 20 million installs, 250,000 daily orders and an annual gross merchandise value (GMV) of US$1.3bil (RM5.3bil).

“With over 71% of the population owning a smartphone and more than 18 million people being active mobile Internet users, 47% of Malaysians have made a purchase using their mobile phones, according to a 2015 Mastercard research,” he said.

Malaysia has one of the highest smartphone penetration in the region, and Ho cited stable infrastructure and increase in affluence as strong contributing factors which have, in turn, spurred mobile shopping.

Shopee has recently entered another strategic partnership with national courier service Pos Laju, the courier arm of Pos Malaysia, to make Shopee University available throughout Malaysia.

This first-ever Shopee University collaboration is intended to empower even more Malaysians to kick-start their mobile commerce journey.

Shopee University offers a series of in-depth tutorial modules crafted by Shopee to aid local entrepreneurs in setting up their online business.

The move comes after garnering enthusiastic responses from participants across 31 classes in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Baru.

At these Shopee University sessions, mCommerce experts will impart a full spectrum of skills and insider tips relevant to both beginners and experienced online sellers.

It covers unique topics from how to leverage mobile to increase sales, to in-depth skills such as optimising online marketing spend and product photography classes.

Together, PosLaju and Shopee aim to empower more Malaysians to explore entrepreneurship as a sustainable source of income, by offering free enrolment to Shopee University across all states in Malaysia.

“Since the launch of the Shopee Free Shipping Programme, we have seen tremendous growth among our sellers with most of them having multiplied orders, up to 10 times in some instances.

“Making Shopee University available nationwide at the same time as the Free Shipping extension is part of our commitment towards making the mobile revolution accessible to even part-time entrepreneurs and small business owners in Malaysia,” said Ho.
