State Health, Transport, National Integration, Non-Muslim Affairs and New Villages Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said it was a sad incident that highlighted the need for education among children on sexual abuse.
To raise awareness on the topic, Dr Mah gave a short talk to the pupils of SJKC Hwa Min in Temoh about human anatomy and how to protect onself from molestation or sexual abuse.
“We do not want another Richard Huckle incident to happen here.
“Schoolchidlren need to know their anatomy so that they will be able to know what people should not do to them.”
The day-long forum also saw three councillors from Selangor giving a talk on human anatomy and how to stay safe.
“Parents find it difficult to open up when it comes to this topic.
“This forum will keep the children informed. It was good that we saw some parents at the event.
“Children are all champions in their own right. They should be confident and protect themselves from all this,” added Dr Mah.
Huckle, the British paedophile, was given 22 life sentences by a court and he would be in jail for at least 23 years for the crimes he committed on children aged between six months and 12 years from poor families in Kuala Lumpur.
He pleaded guilty to 71 offences and police found more than 20,000 pornographic images of children on his computer and camera when he was arrested at Gatwick Airport in London in 2014.
At the same forum, staff from SJKC Hwa Min also celebrated Dr Mah’s birthday, which fell on July 19.
Pupils, parents, teachers and even reporters were seen singing the Happy Birthday song and the rendition brought a big smile to Dr Mah’s face, who was surprised to see the two cakes being brought out after he delivered his speech.
