IT was an afternoon of giveaways at Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) Civic Hall (Dewan Sivik) as 150 less fortunate families were given cash vouchers to spend this festive season.
Made up of both single mothers and households earning below RM2,000, these families live around the city such as in PPR Kota Damansara, PPR Lembah Subang, Desa Mentari, Taman Medan and Taman Dato Harun.
“We hope this little bit of money can help lessen their burden this Hari Raya and enable them to buy festive necessities,” said Petaling Jaya mayor Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain.
He added during the event that this giveaway was part of MBPJ’s community service project and would be continued in future years.
Apart from this, MBPJ also took the opportunity to reward all its staff with a set of bubur lambuk (porridge), batik cloth and sarong kain pelikat.
A total of 70 staff spent the morning cooking 12 pots of porridge, one of which was vegetarian.
“This vegetarian porridge is MBPJ’s own recipe and we hope next year we will be able to make our own dodol to distribute to staff,” he said.
Mohd Azizi joined the MBPJ staff to cook the porridge in the morning before packaging it for distribution.
In addition, MBPJ rewarded staff’s children who scored straight As in their school exams.
Some 32 students were presented with a certificate and cash prize worth up to RM800 each.
UPSR and Kertas Peperiksaan Penilaian Sekolah Rendah Agama recipients received RM200 while those who sat for Form Three Assessment and SPM were given RM500 and RM800 respectively.
