MIRI: Sarawak DAP is assembling a team of legal eagles to fight the election petition filed by a BN direct candidate to nullify its victory in the Pujut state constituency in the recent state elections.
DAP Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon yesterday called for a press conference in the Miri DAP office and said that at least six lawyers were being lined up to handle the election petition.
“We the Sarawak DAP will fight this election petition all the way,” said Dr Ting.
BN direct candidate for the May 7 state polls in Pujut state constituency – Datuk Hii King Chiong – filed the petition in the Miri High Court against Ting on Thursday.
Business tycoon Hii in his statement of petition claimed that Dr Ting had already acquired Australian citizenship and thus should be disqualified as an assemblyman in Sarawak.
Hii claimed that he had evidence that Dr Ting is a registered voter with the Australian Electoral Conmission.
Asked at the press conference to comment on the claims that he is holding Australian citizenship, Dr Ting said he only held Malaysian citizenship.
“I do not hold any other citizenship. I cannot comment further on the Australian citizenship claims as alleged by the petitioner as there is already a legal proceeding launched against me.
“However, I will definitely fight the petition and explain in the court if there is a hearing.
“For now I can say that I did not make any misrepresentation in my election nomination form.
“The fact that my nomination was accepted (by the Election Commission) shows I was eligible to contest as an election candidate.
“And the fact that I won, showed that the voters want me to serve them for the next five years.
“It is regrettable that the BN direct candidate is not willing to accept the verdict of the voters.
“He has instead resorted to use the legal process in his attempt to deny the verdict of the voters,” said Dr Ting.
