Skies open up after special prayers

TEMERLOH: Four hours after 80 residents from three villages performed special prayers at the Sungai Temerloh sandbank, it rained in several areas of the district.

Temerloh district deputy kadi Mohd Amin Abd Muttalib led the special prayers as the water level in the river has been dropping due to the drought.

State Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said residents of Kampung Tebal, Kampung Bangau Parit and Kampung Tengggala in the Seberang Temerloh sub-district performed the prayers.

"Temerloh is one of the districts which has been badly affected by the El Nino phenomenon.

“Even the river life is affected as the temperature in this area has reached 37 degrees Celsius.

"So the initiative taken by the residents to pray for rain should be commended," he told reporters after performing the prayers in Kampung Bangau Parit, here.

Mukim Seberang Temerloh Mosque chairman Muttalib Bidin, 64, said the drought had affected their daily lives.

"The drought this time is worse than in 1968, as not only Sungai Pahang is almost dry, but even the swamp areas too.

"It has badly affected many caged fish farmers in Sungai Pahang and disrupted water supply to homes and business premises," he said. – Bernama
