MIRI: The Miri Airport capacity will be increased to four million passengers per annum via a major upgrading exercise that will cost RM285mil.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai yesterday said the Ministry will start the upgrading works to cater to surging needs here.
“At the moment, the airport here handles 2.3 million passengers per year.
“It is expected to surge fast so we will upgrade it to cater to four million people,” he said when visiting the airport yesterday.
Liow said the ministry would also increase its subsidy for rural flights by RM30mil per year from RM160mil to RM190mil as there are more than 500 flights in rural areas statewide per week catering to thousands who needed air connectivity.
On the state elections, he said there was a noticeable positive swing in the sentiments of the Chinese towards the Barisan Nasional government as could be seen during this state elections in Sarawak.
Liow, who is MCA president, said the state Barisan had been doing many good things under the leadership of Tan Sri Adenan Satem.
“The Chinese community values those who can deliver results in terms of implementing good policies that benefit the rakyat.
“So far, Tan Sri Adenan has done very well and what he has done also benefited the Chinese at large.
“That is why there is a positive swing in support of the Chinese towards the Barisan in Sarawak,” he said.
He added that this augured well for the Barisan not just at the state level but also at the national level.
Liow said the MCA had been cooperating with the Sarawak Barisan and in particular, the Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP), to uphold and improve the welfare of the Chinese nationwide.
He praised SUPP vice-president Datuk Lee Kim Shin and SUPP secretary general Datuk Sebastian Ting for their hard work and dedication towards the people of Miri and Sarawak.
