But housewife M. Paruvathi, 33 and her husband, who is a factory operator, has been surviving on the amount over the years.
“We have been leading a simple life all along.
“We are very grateful there are kind- hearted people who are willing to help us with the daily necessities,” she said after receiving a bag of grocery items at the Sri Ambakarathur Patra Kaliamman Temple in Jalan Air Itam in Penang on Thursday.
She was among 30 people who received the items from the temple and Malaysia Hindu Sangam Air Itam Council.
Council deputy chairman R. Santhara Sagaran said they had been working with the temple in the ‘Akshaya Patra’ project aimed at helping the poor in Air Itam.
“Containers are placed at the temple for devotees to donate groceries such as rice, cooking oil, sugar and others to be given to the poor.
“When the containers are full, we will give out the groceries to those in need,” he said at the project launch.
Malaysia Hindu Sangam Penang chairman M. Perumal said the project was launched in conjunction with the Tamil New Year.
Also present was Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai.
