Councillors urged to make people-centric decisions

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) staff have been told to make people-centric decisions that can bring the town to a better future.

Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee said local councils, unlike other government agencies, had councillors who made policy decisions.

“Apart from those legislations and policies set by the state government and the ministries, many policies affecting the businesses and local communities in the respective local council areas of jurisdiction are discussed and decided by a sitting of the full council.

“Therefore, councillors should feel important tin the physical and social development of the town,” he said at a dinner in conjunction with the SMC sport and recreation club annual general meeting on Sunday night.

Hii said it was also very important for the councillors to be well versed with the local issues to have the correct information in hand to make the best decisions for the local communities.

“Although the officers could provide the necessary provisions of the law and legislations and other information, better decisions could be reached when councillors have the first hand information through their personal visits and fact-finding discussions with the local communities,” he said.

He was pleased to note with sincerity that the SMC had been carrying out its roles and functions effectively and efficiently to ensure that the local communities in Sibu could enjoy themselves in a clean, safe, beautiful and sustainable urban environment.

Although it was definitely not an easy task to satisfy everyone, the council must ensure that they tried their very best in the limits of their resources, he said.
